AFFF/PFAS Site Audits
In response to legacy issues associated with the use of Aqueous Film Forming Foams (AFFF) which contain a group of manufactured chemicals known as PFAS (per- and poly-flouroalkyl substances), Defence embarked on a large program of investigations across many sites Australia wide. JBS&G has been providing independent technical oversight in the capacity as Site Auditor / Technical Adviser since 2016 when the issue first came into the public interest.
With the complete range of in-house technical specialists, JBS&G’s auditors have been able to provide up-to-date knowledge of PFAS investigation and remediation methodologies, along with the rapidly changing regulations and guidelines around this emerging contamination issue.
The audits are being undertaken at:
- HMAS Albatross
- RAAF Gingin Airfield
- Harold E Holt Naval Communications Station
- RAAF Base Learmonth
The works are ongoing but to date have included the technical review and comment of the lead consultants work undertaken, site inspections by the Auditors to observe sample collection works, provision of ongoing technical review, biota surveys and verification on risk characterisation models and assessments as well as participation in project meetings/workshop/discussions. The works involve significant offsite assessment as well as frequent community, government and regulator liaison.
