JBS&G supports Seabin to clean up Sydney Harbour

Leading environmental consultancy JBS&G will help remove an estimated 1.4 tonnes of ocean pollution every year, through the sponsorship of a Seabin unit installed in the iconic Sydney Harbour today.

Founded in 2016, Seabin has a vision to address the scourge of ocean pollution, particularly pollution caused by plastics.

A Seabin is a simple, yet pioneering technology that collects microplastics and other ocean debris from the water. Described by Seabin Co-Founder and CEO, Pete Ceglinski, as a cross between a garbage can and a pool skimmer, the Seabin unit sucks in water and passes it through a catch bag.

The filtered water is released back into the ocean, while particles of floating debris; plastic bottles, plastic bags, polystyrene, microplastics, fuel, oil, detergents, parking tickets, cigarette butts, chocolate wrappers, fishing line and even microfibres will be captured on a daily basis.

Seabin™ have set a goal of being operational in 100 cities by 2050, and launched their first Smart City Pilot in Sydney, collecting more than 16 tonnes of marine debris from Sydney’s waterways and filtering over 3 billion litres of water within the first year.

JBS&G Chief Executive Officer Andrew Lau says the Seabin sponsorship reflects JBS&G’s support for organisations and endeavours that are committed to protecting and enhancing the health of the environment around us.

“As environmental consultants, we’re serious about protecting our waterways, and helping others to do the same. Every day in different ways our work involves finding solutions to complex environmental problems.

“Our vision is to create better places for future generations to work, live and play – and for this reason we see great alignment with the work that Seabin is doing to protect and enhance our waterways for the protection of marine life and future generations.

“Seabins will help us understand what is polluting the waterway in the Sydney Harbour, providing valuable information that can be linked to weather patterns, stormwater drains and the water catchment. Sponsoring Seabin to gather this intelligence in this iconic location will give Seabin and organisations like ours the chance to work with and educate communities about their impact.

“It is our pleasure to be supporting Seabin to undertake this valuable work.”

Pete Ceglinski, Co Founder and CEO of Seabin said, “We are thrilled to have the support of leading environmental consultants JBS&G. This support has enabled us to further amplify our impact, by installing a Seabin unit in a new location within Sydney Harbour. We look forward to working with JBS&G to highlight the sobering issue of plastics in our waterways, and utlising the vital data sets collated from the Seabin catch, to encourage positive policy making and behavioral change.”

The unit sponsored by JBS&G is located in Walsh Bay, Sydney Harbour.
