PCE Assessment and Cleanup

Soil and groundwater remediation of a former commercial laundry site impacted with PCE was undertaken within a period of 18 months. Approximately 800 tonnes of highly impacted soils were excavated and treated on-site through volatilisation and off-gas treatment of the contaminant. Following treatment the soils were able to be reused on site avoiding high disposal costs. The maximum contaminant concentration in groundwater was reduced from 99 mg/L in the source zone area to less than 0.1 mg/L. This was achieved using high performance Enhanced In-Situ Biodegradation technology using safe food-grade chemicals. Site boundary groundwater concentrations were reduced from between 5 and 15 mg/L to below laboratory detection limits. As a result further off-site migration of the contaminant has been halted. The site is now able to be divested and redeveloped.
